Employment services at VISIONS are available for legally blind persons of all ages and experience.
YOUTH EMPLOYMENT SERVICES
Prevocational Services familiarize participants with the world of work including
job related social skills, interview techniques, job search skills, training
requirements for various jobs and site visits to work places. These services
are, as a rule, provided at Vacation Camp for the Blind. This residential
setting serves to provide teens with an experience away from home where
age appropriate independent functioning is encouraged.
Work experiences are typically the next phase of employment services provided for individuals who are still attending high school or college. Participants are assisted with finding summer placements and after-school work experiences that will match their skill level and career interests. For many individuals, their first work experience is at a site, such as the Selis Manor Snack Bar, where there is a full-time job coach. As students grow in expertise and confidence, placements in the Community with greater responsibility are secured.
ADULT EMPLOYMENT SERVICES
Foundation Skills Training Services are offered to Individuals who are seeking
full-time employment, but may first need training in foundation skills.
These skills may include daily living skills, employment related communication
skills (including Brailling and keyboarding), orientation and mobility
skills.
Job Placement is offered after completion of foundation skills training. Individuals work with a VISIONS Employment Specialist to find and maintain suitable employment. Services are individually designed to ensure that each person’s strengths and interests are drawn upon. Once an individual is placed in a job, the Employment Specialist works with the individual, as needed, in their adjustment to work and the workplace. This may include recommending workplace modifications and adaptive technology. VISIONS’ staff remains actively involved every step of the way to ensure that both the client and the employer have a positive and productive experience.
Vocational Assessment and Training is offered at Blindline® for
individuals interested in learning customer service, call center operator
skills, Internet research and management. Blindline® is a fully accessible
database and call center that provides vocational training and valuable work
experience.
